No Fix No Fee Computer Repair: What It Means in Australia (2026)

A computer repair workshop.

No fix no fee computer repair sounds simple: if the technician can’t repair your device, you don’t pay for labour. In practice, Australian shops use the phrase in different ways.

Some mean zero charge unless a successful repair is completed. Others still charge a bench fee, call-out fee or data-assessment fee separate from the repair quote. Ask what is included, get the answer in writing, and compare local options in our computer repair directory.

For broader rights see Australian Consumer Law and computer repair and how to choose a computer repair shop.

What repairers usually mean by “no fix no fee”

Most independent workshops use the term for labour on the stated fault. Example: you bring in a laptop that won’t charge. If they can’t restore charging after reasonable diagnosis, you pay nothing for that repair attempt. That’s the clean version of the promise.

Common exceptions shops will spell out in their terms:

  • Diagnostic or assessment fee: charged even when the fault is uneconomical to fix (liquid damage, failed motherboard).
  • Call-out or travel fee: mobile techs may charge to attend even if the on-site fix fails.
  • Parts already ordered: non-returnable screens, batteries or boards may still be billed if you approved the order.
  • Data recovery: often quoted separately; “no fix” on hardware doesn’t always mean “no fee” on recovery attempts.

So the marketing line and the job sheet can disagree. Believe the job sheet.

No fix no fee vs diagnostic fee

TermTypical meaningAsk before booking
No fix no feeNo labour charge if the agreed repair can’t be completedDoes this cover the fault I described, or only one line item?
Free quote / free diagnosisShort bench check; may be time-limitedHow long is the free check? What happens if it needs teardown?
Diagnostic feePaid assessment, sometimes credited toward repairIs it credited if I proceed? What if I decline?
Call-out feeTravel / attendance charge for mobile workIs call-out separate from repair labour?

But don’t assume “free diagnosis” means unlimited board-level investigation. Teardown time is labour. If they need to open a glued ultrabook to quote, clarify fees before the screws come out.

How this sits with Australian Consumer Law

ACL consumer guarantees still apply to paid services: due care and skill, fitness for purpose, and reasonable time. A “no fix no fee” slogan doesn’t let a shop mislead you about what was tried or charge for work you didn’t authorise. It also doesn’t erase a disclosed diagnostic fee you agreed to before they started. Read the ACCC overview of consumer guarantees and our consumer rights playbook for quotes and deposits.

We’re not giving legal advice here. If a dispute escalates, use ACCC and your state fair trading pathways, and keep invoices.

Red flags in the fine print

  • No written definition of what “fix” means for your fault
  • Diagnostic fee only mentioned after teardown
  • Pressure to approve parts before they’ve confirmed the fault
  • “No fix no fee” that excludes the exact symptom you booked for
  • Refusal to return the device until a surprise bench fee is paid

If that last one happens, document everything and get advice from your state consumer agency. Don’t hand over extra cash in a panic without understanding the claim.

Read the intake form before you sign. Some forms bury “all diagnostics non-refundable after 15 minutes” in tiny type. That can still be fine if you understood it before the screws came out.

How to book without surprises

  1. Describe the fault in one sentence on the job sheet.
  2. Ask which fees apply if they can’t fix it.
  3. Set a spend cap and a “call me first” rule for extras.
  4. Keep a copy of the quote before you leave.

Compare shops via locations. For dodgy patterns, see how to spot a dodgy repair shop.

Take a photo of the signed job sheet before you leave the counter. If the scope changes later, you have the original wording on your phone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is no fix no fee the same as a free repair?

No. Successful repairs are still charged. The phrase is about failed attempts, and even then fees can apply if disclosed.

Can a shop charge a diagnostic fee and still advertise no fix no fee?

Yes, if they’re clear that diagnosis is separate from repair labour. Clarity matters more than the slogan.

Does no fix no fee cover data recovery?

Often not. Recovery is frequently a separate quote with its own success terms.

What if they break something during diagnosis?

Document the condition on drop-off (photos help). ACL care-and-skill rules may be relevant; see our ACL guide and ACCC materials.
