ACMA’s 2022 Remote-Access Scam Warning: A Dated Consumer Note

What the dated ACMA alert says

The Do Not Call Register consumer alert describes callers impersonating companies such as Telstra, NBN Co and Microsoft. They claim a device or connection has a problem, then ask for remote access, financial details or payment.

ACMA advises hanging up, withholding remote access and using independently found official contact details if you need to check the claim. The name of a remote-support application does not establish whether the person using it is legitimate.

Chosen remote help is a different booking

If you deliberately contact a repair business for remote support, confirm its identity, scope, price and permissions through the contact channel you chose. Don’t take an unexpected caller’s “support” label as proof that you made that booking.

If access or money has already been handed over

Contact your financial institution promptly if banking details, transactions or money are involved. ACMA also advises notifying the phone or internet provider after falling victim. Don’t wait for a computer repair appointment before raising a financial compromise.
