Essential Eight Retirement Timeline: What Changes After June 2026

What ASD announced in June 2026

The Australian Signals Directorate is replacing the single Essential Eight maturity ladder with a modular Essentials series. Enterprise IT comes first. Cloud, operational technology and possibly agentic AI follow as separate domains.

Horlyck told iTnews both frameworks stay live during transition. ASD expects to start deprecating Essential Eight around 12 months after Essentials for enterprise IT launches, then retire the whole Essential Eight document near 24 months.

Public consultation on the first chapter ran through the ACSC Partner Portal until 12 July 2026. That window closed before this August update. Final text will land on cyber.gov.au when ASD publishes it.

Why the framework is shifting

Essential Eight started in 2017, evolving from ASD’s older Top Four. Horlyck said it was built for on-premises enterprise IT before cloud was the default. Shared-responsibility SaaS stacks don’t map cleanly to the same control labels.

Agencies also complained that maturity levels moved under their feet. ASD absorbed new threat tradecraft into existing levels, so scores looked worse without the estate getting weaker. Essentials is meant to decouple threat-informed mitigations from that fixed ladder.

Timeline at a glance

Dates are ASD estimates, not statute. Contracts signed in 2026 may still say “Essential Eight Maturity Level Two” until counterparties reword them.

What the eight controls still ask you to do

Until ASD retires the document, the published Essential Eight mitigations remain the practical checklist. They are: application control, patch applications, configure Microsoft Office macros, user application hardening, restrict administrative privileges, patch operating systems, multi-factor authentication, and regular backups.

Those eight still map to a family PC and a ten-seat workshop. Unpatched Windows is still the easy door. An admin account used for daily browsing is still a gift. A backup you have never restored is still a hope, not a plan.

Practical steps for home PCs and small shops

• Keep Windows and browsers updated. Rename or not, unpatched software is still the easy door.
• Use MFA on email, banking and Microsoft/Google accounts. Prefer app-based codes or passkeys over SMS where you can.
• Limit admin accounts on family and work PCs; use a standard user for daily browsing.
• Test backups you can restore without the same login an attacker might steal.

Keep a short register: what you run, when you last tested restore, who owns admin. That travels better than an old maturity-score PDF when an underwriter updates wording mid-year.
